Welcome to the Studio Uma blog

I'm a creative and modern wedding photographer in Austin, Texas. At Studio Uma, we work like crazy for our brides and grooms to produce gorgeous works of art that stir the soul. We do magic things with light and color. We love modern Indian wedding photography! For more info, email us at uma@umasanghvi.com.

Austin wedding photographer, Uma Sanghvi of Studio Uma, was named one of the ‘Best of the Best 2011’ wedding photographers around the world by Junebug Weddings blog and has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist in Breaking News Photography. Long before she was capturing the emotions of brides and grooms with her camera, Uma was an award-winning photojournalist whose assignments took her to remote villages in Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka and Haiti.

A self-portrait with friends — celebrating Holi in Mauritius, Africa.

Growing up in Virginia, Uma studied painting – her first love – every summer at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. After graduating from Stanford with honors in Biological Sciences, Uma turned down a spot in a top neuroscience PhD program (sorry Mom and Dad!) to pursue her passion. She opted to study photojournalism at the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University – earning a Masters degree and a lifetime of inspiration from some amazing professors. Ten years later, she would join the faculty at OU to teach photojournalism for three years.

Uma’s work was part of the Palm Beach Post’s hurricane coverage portfolio that was one of three finalists for a Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography in 2005. Then she received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to spend a year creating a photo-documentary of traditional marriage rituals on the colorful African island nation of Mauritius.

Uma has also scaled the globe to photograph Burmese refugees on the Thailand border, and fishing villages on remote islands in the Maldives. She used to do silly things like hitch-hike with her surfboard through the Hawaiian Islands (sorry Mom and Dad!) and dive with sharks in the outer Great Barrier Reef. But these days she’s traded globe-trotting and journalism for weddings and whimsy.

Uma brings her love of capturing light and emotion to wedding photography. She loves using her creativity to document people on one of the most joyous days of their life.

She doesn’t miss the sharks.

Neither do her parents.
